On a shaded lot near Exeter, a gravel path to the back cottage turned to mud every winter. We formed a 4-foot-wide concrete walkway the full length of the yard, with a gentle slope to keep water moving and a landing at the cottage door.
The path was laid out to miss the drip lines of the largest oaks, and we hand-dug near roots rather than using equipment.
A light broom finish keeps the walk from getting slick under fallen leaves.
